Trust is essential for leadership. So parents, teachers, supervisors, and others must always build trust. Last week in “Service Saturdays”, we considered how to do that through “circles of proof” and “circles of access”. But we also need to know how to keep trust. Today, we’ll look at hindrances.
Again, please note that I originally produced these videos as an Army Chaplain for my unit’s personnel stationed around the world. So each one begins with a legal disclaimer and ends with my contact information. Each video also applies biblical principles in non-religious language to facilitate the broadest use. Because tools4trenches is an explicitly Christian ministry blog, I will precede each video with related Scripture passages and discussion questions for your use with your family, church, or other groups as God leads you.
Consider the following questions and Scriptures on leadership and hindrances to trust.
- How can the people’s knowledge of a leader (or lack of knowledge) hinder their trust – before others know the leader or after? (Exodus 2:11-15, Exodus 4:1, Matthew 17:14-21, John 16:25-33, 1 Timothy 1:12, Titus 3:1-11, 1 Peter 3:8-17).
- In what ways can limited circles of access and greater circles of proof hinder trust between leaders and their people? (Exodus 17:8-16 then Exodus 18:24-26, 1 Kings 12:1-15, Esther 4:11, Matthew 7:16, Matthew 23, Ephesians 6:1-4, James 2:14-17)
- Who are some of the people in your life needing greater proof or access for greater trust in your leadership? (Galatians 6:6-10, 1 Timothy 3:1-7)
- When are some times we should not be concerned about others’ trust in us? (Ezekiel 3:1-11, Matthew 13:53-58, Luke 12:49-59) Elaborate from other passages in Scripture
This series specifically addresses trust in work relationships, but (with the exception of “needing the watchers”) the principles apply in our service to Christ as His body before the watching and hurting world.
