(In 2017, I wrote this series for the 40 days prior to Easter to prepare our hearts and minds for the significance of Jesus’ resurrection. I’m reposting the series now for the 40 days after Easter to encourage us to follow through, living in the risen Savior and King.)
My wife can testify that riding in the car with me can be an adventure. Both of us remember one day a few years ago in particular. I started turning the wrong way down a one-way street, corrected myself quickly and almost drove into a ditch. Then I made several wrong turns and almost got us lost. Since no one was hurt (and I wasn’t arrested), it was hilarious…later. But it was sad, too. Much of driving is simple: trust the signs and follow their directions.
In the same way, Jesus’ call is simple: follow Him by faith in Him. We’re the ones who complicate matters with our “But what if…” or “I’d rather…”
The Lord doesn’t cater to us to have it our way, for He is not Burger King. He is the King. He doesn’t even blast His way through and threaten us “come with me if you want to live”, for He is not a Terminator. He is Life.
Jesus is the Lord Almighty, the only mediator between us and His Father. So with all authority and love, He commands us to follow Him by faith in Him. Trust and obedience is Life. Though the road may be rocky following the One who suffered, the destination with Him will be eternal joy.
There is no other road that we must travel. His “high way” is the only way.
