“Service” can sound difficult and – to be honest – sometimes boring. Right? After all, most of us serve someone Monday through Friday, and Sunday belongs to God. So many of us are strongly tempted to see Saturday as our one day in the week.

In this weekly series, I invite you to journey with me in seeing service to others as one of the greatest ways to experience the joy of Christ. For that reason, I will be equipping and encouraging you for loving relationships with the people God has given you: counseling basics, reviews of Christian movies and books that you can enjoy with family and friends, example apologetics (how to defend the Christian faith to non-believers), links to other Christian websites to help your loved ones, devotionals and other articles, links to Christian comedy, and more.

“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’” (John 21:15)

If you’ve read any posts in this series, “Workout Wednesday”, you know that I am encouraging us to use physical exercise for small group Bible studies and Christian fellowship in a program of “W.A.I.T. Training”.  There are at least two … Continue reading

Biblical justice: “Give ’em the Chair”

Growing up, whenever I heard people talk about biblical justice, it was always associated with giving some confirmed criminal what they deserved.  That concept of ‘biblical justice’ seems to have come from the idea that God – especially from their … Continue reading

“From the bottom of my heart”

In some circles, that’s a common phrase. But it’s usually a rare reality. On the surface, many of us answer “I’m great! How are you?” If we’re with a trusted friend, though, most of us will admit we struggle. We … Continue reading

“Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus”, by Nabeel Qureshi

Islam. Muslims. Jihad. Depending on our individual experience, any of these words might elicit a strong response from us – and not necessarily positive. As an American Soldier who’s deployed in response to Islamic terrorism in one form or another, … Continue reading

Below is a screenshot that hyperlinks to a series of relatively brief non-religious videos on the dynamics of values.  The purpose, as stated on the banner of the channel, is to equip and encourage greater awareness for management (leadership) of self and … Continue reading

“The River”, an example of using art in counseling

What can Christian counselors do when the hurting person in front of us can’t seem to say what’s on their heart or mind?  The immediate goal must be to help them feel as safe as possible.  One strategy that may … Continue reading

Example Continuity Files – a Chapel Congregation Chaplain

Should the senior Chaplain over a chapel congregation pass the baton, too?  I’m not talking about merely stepping aside as they leave and introducing their replacement, but rather planning intentional continuity of the vision and strategies of ministry.  I think so. In my experience, such transition … Continue reading

Example Continuity Files – a Chaplain Resource Manager

Passing the baton successfully is especially critical if you’re running the race as a Chaplain Resource Manager (CRM). Most CRMs don’t have a Finance degree – just a two-week Army school on big picture policies and some software stuff. So … Continue reading

Example Continuity Files – a Deputy Garrison Chaplain

Passing the baton successfully can be especially difficult when there’s no one identified to receive it.  I wrote this package (the last of five example continuity files) for my Garrison Chaplain Office (GARCHO) team when we learned that the slot … Continue reading

Example Continuity Files – a Brigade Chaplain

Again, passing the baton successfully is essential, especially for supervisory ministries.  The outgoing Brigade Chaplain has a bigger picture perspective that their replacement needs to equip and encourage the rest of the teams.  And in my opinion, they need to pass on more than example files of ministries, … Continue reading

Example Continuity Files – a Family Life Chaplain

Passing the baton successfully is essential for continuity.  Whether you’re finishing your part or picking up where the other runner left off, everybody knows that the transition is one of the toughest and most critical times of the race.  And this being the beginning … Continue reading

The age of “Ultra…” and God the Avenger

Few people know how to shine a spotlight on hope more powerfully than movie makers.  Christians in any type of leadership – pastor, husband, parent, employer, supervisor, teacher, or simply a respected neighbor – can learn a lot from these media marketers.  Consider “The Avengers” sequel being released this Friday. The … Continue reading

9 reasons people attend chapels over churches

Most of us are probably familiar with hospital chapels.  You might not know about the many other types of chapels, however. Military installations and other government agencies, prisons, rehabilitation centers, police and fire departments, retirement centers and nursing homes, corporations, … Continue reading

Two types of feedback loops: personal sinfulness and intervening grace

Most major counseling theories today don’t look backward to the past of our family and culture or even inward to our personal values and beliefs.  They are mainly concerned with the here-and-now of interpersonal conflicts. I, too, see goodness and … Continue reading
